In a nutshell. I had a list of movies I really wanted to see this summer. I'm primarily a summer movie person because I love the action/sci fi/blockbuster flicks. I don't have anything against the "serious dramas". There are quite a few I like very much, but I have to say this genre is whre my heart lies. So, the list:
Spiderman III Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer Transformers Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Pirates of the Carribean III
I must admit I LURVE living up the road from a drive in. Last weekend, we all went and John and the kids watched Ratatoullie on Screen 1 and I hiked over to Screen 2 with my lawn chair, blanket and cheap radio and watched Fantastic Four. THEN on Tuesday, they got Transformers and put it on a double bill with Fantastic Four, and John sent me on my own. For those of you who have small children, you will appreciate the sheer bliss of going somewhere alone.
My friend Mandy in England decided she wanted to get me something, and since it ws around my birthday, I decided it would be alright. So I sent her the link to my Amazon Wish list (which you will find on the navigation colum to your left...ROFL). Now, of course, I in no way expected her to get anything fancy. I mostly have book, movies, TV shows, that kind of thing on there. Some jewelry and for some unkown reason a few months ago I put a Tungsten E2 Palm with an expanded memory card on the lsit. I was absolutely shocked when I discovered she'd gotten me the Palm!!! It makes me feel like a complete schmoe when people buy me things, when I really can't afford to reciprocate. I have to struggle very hard to be grateful and not chew them out for spending so much money. Anyway, this really does relate to the story. Among all the other really cool features, this comes with a .pdf converter so you can put .pdf books on it with the expanded memory card. So I left a little bit early, got a good spot at the drive in and sat there in the car listening to music and re-reading Harry Potter 6 on the Palm. I don't even know how to articulate the feeling of not having to "be responsible" for a couple hours. Bliss, just sheer bliss.
Now on to the review. You already know I'm recommending Spiderman III. Wicked good flick. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer...well, it definitely tried harder than the last one. The character of the Surfer was PERFECT! Lawrence Fishburn does the voice and it brings such an amazing depth to the CGI. I don't think people would have been nearly as able to connect with the character if not for his portrayal. It's a terrificly hard job to "act" as a computer generated image. The way they put this together, he really was the surfer. The voice and the body meshed amazingly well.
Transformers...well, you either have to be a teenager or have watched the show as a kid to get the full effect. The pacing was just off. The first half of the movie was too slow and spent too much time on set up and back story without moving the story along much while doing it. It's like reading a Gothic English novel. They'd spend four pages describing a room or a woman's hat and by half way down the second page you're shouting "MOVE ON ALREADY!" LOL However the second half of movie was hands down worth the price of admission. THAT was the Transformers I remember. Hee... And Optimus Prime was portrayed perfectly.
Summer homeschooling has been going well, but we took a couple days off for the holiday and science class is going to be tomorrow instead of today because it's going to be making cup cakes with Daddy. I'm kind of glad. I've had to do the science classes the last two weeks and it was a bit of work. We did Octopuses the first week then Continents and Oceans the next. Next week it's going to be introduction to government. If I had any sence I'd start doing the research now. LOLOL The kids seem to enjoy it though. Ian takes a bit of extra hands on work, but he does seem to be getting the concepts. Yesterday we did sentense structure and even though I had to ask some questions to help him get his brain focused on the task and understanding the lesson, once he did, he was off and running. I did do the physical writing of the last two sentences though, cause the poor kid was just getting wore out and frustrated. He figured out the structure, told me what the sentence should be and I just copied it down as he said it. I don't think that's really cheating since writing isn't the object of the lesson.
Anyways, I digress. POTC III is at the drive in now, but it's always the last feature, but Harry Potter is coming out next week, so I'm hopeful I'll at least get to see that one. Keep your fingers crossed. :D
