Repealing theTiahrt Provision

Tucked away in a federal funding bill since 2003 is a provision that makes it harder for cops to catch criminals.

The provision actually hides gun trace data from law enforcement and the public.

Why does the gun lobby always push for this provision? The trace data shows that most crime guns come from a small number of corrupt dealers. Without comprehensive trace data, these dangerous gun dealers avoid public scrutiny and local police are deprived of warnings of possible criminal activity in their communities.

I have to post about this.

The Tiahrt Amendment does not interfere with nor make information less accessible to "official" investigations. I just found your blog and it appears that you're fairly anti-gun. I'm not going to try and change that. But the record needs to be straight that there are two forces at work regarding the Tiahrt Amendment.

The Tiahrt Amendment was put in place to protect the personal and private information of citizens. The purpose is so that you or anybody else without official backing can't look me up and see that I own guns and then target me for whatever purpose.

Currently Mayor Bloomberg is spending millions in ads trying to overturn the Tiahrt Amendment so that he can gain access to the personal and private records of citizens without having to go through official channels. His purpose? So far it has been to push lawsuits against gun dealers in other states. Not even in NY where he is the Mayor.

Re-Posting Bloombergs ads on your blog is what he wants. He wants people not understanding the reality of things to go forth and spread the propaganda.

The BATFE and FOP both support the Tiahrt Amendment. It does not prevent official access to trace data. Please educate yourself on the facts of the issue before spreading propaganda.

Why is it that when it serves the conservative agenda, digging into people's private business is outrageous. But when ever anybody says Homeland Security we're all just supposed to drop trou for the cavity search with a smile on our faces?

It's not a right or entitlement to own a gun. NONE of you ever read the 2nd amendment before you go spoutin that crap. The guy who shot up VT legally owned a gun, but had a history of severe mental illness. Do you want to approach any of the family members of VT, Columbine or any of the other mass murder sites and explain that a person's non-existant right to own a gun in private is more important than their child's right to be alive?
